Safeguarding
“Stuart's workshops looked at strategies and coping mechanisms for creative minds, where overthinking and perfectionism are part of the makeup. Stuart delved into a world where young people won't feel alone. A fantastic session that everyone could benefit from.”

Centre for Advanced Training Manager
‘Safeguarding the Creative Process and the Artist’ grew from Stuart’s creative practice in developing ROCKBOTTOM. The journey played out in INSET training, training workshops, classes and public speaking.
This practice continues to evolve and develop using the Human Givens model of psychotherapy: a framework that embeds a clear and rich practice of bravery with safe creativity.
Stuart offers Emotional Health in Dance INSET training and workshops for students which can involve a wider team including a Dance Scientist and a Psychotherapist.
Stuart has also developed a workshop called Emotional Hijacking in Dance that can be used to train teachers or delivered directly to students (options to deliver over video conference are also available).
Stuart has delivered workshops around safeguarding in the studio and remotely over video for these groups and institutions:
- National Centre for Advance Training scheme at The Place (Audition Toolkit workshop)
- Dance East and University of Suffolk Dance for students training to be Community Dance Artists
- Laban Centre for Advance Training for students and staff
- Protein Dance Embrace training programme for freelance dance artists
- IADMS International Digital Conference

Rambert School Project
In 2019 Stuart Waters worked with Rambert School students, in partnership with Elsa Urmston, Steve Peck and Chris Nash, on a project called Safeguarding the Creative Process.
The team explored how to safeguard vulnerability and mental wellbeing in the dance studio with the students.
- Develop resilience and agency in young dancers
- Apply strategies to safeguard ‘risk’
- Empower young dancers to safeguard their mental well-being
- Encourage self-regulation within creative processes
- Empower the next generation of dancers to incorporate thinking around safeguarding mental health into their practice and processes
